Surj, of the UK based hip-hop Bhangra band RDB, talks about their latest collaborationsYou guys describe the band’s music as ‘RDB’ music. What is ‘RDB’ music? The best way to describe our music and, in fact, all other music , would be listen to it and decide on how it makes you personally. We have been told that the RDB genre of music is a powerful upbeat urban sound mixed with really cool international beats, vocals and melodies.
And yes, there’s the desi beats too. Hence, the band’s name – RDB! This stands for – Rhythm, representing the melodies, Dhol, representing the desi culture, and Bass, representing our international beats.
Talking about international sound, how was it collaborating with stars like Snoop Dogg?Snoop is a amazing person go work with and he is naturally talented. Our collaboration with Snoop was truly a first of its kind. And it has since then opened up doors for other mainstream Bollywood collaborations.
How did RDB land up doing music for Bollywood? You know, the RDB sound has always been an international sound for all different types of projects from – UK Bhangra to German Rock. And once the Bollywood market opened its doors to recruit different types of music, our band’s sound was adored. And this is why one of our biggest fans, and now our dear friend, Mr Akshay Kumar was keen to take on our music. This was a truly an honour for us which also opened doors of opportunities.
“Saddi Galli”, “Paisa Paisa” and “Singh Is Kinng” have become big Bollywood hits. Any plans to shift to Bollywood permanently? We are always open to take on Bollywood projects and we are working on some. We make music for anyone and everyone, but right now we have been gearing up to release some our best works which is on our own independent album called “Worldwide”. This album will assemble all the different styles and sounds of the band that we are known for. We’re also working on Nindy Kaur’s debut album “Nindypendant”.
So what are the new Bollywood projects? It’s all a bit hush-hush at the moment. What we can tell you is that we have just finished a new Indo-Candian project called “Breakaway” which also has a huge star cast. There’s comedian Russell Peters, actors Camilla Bell and Rob Lowe, and there’s also a cameo from international star Drake and Akshay Kumar. One of the main songs made by us will feature international rap star Ludacris, which is great!
Tell us about your Indian roots. Though born in the UK, do you guys visit India often? You know ours hearts are always with our Indian desi roots even though we live in the West. But to really do what we do best, we need a good blend of both cultures. Our favourite places to visit in India would be Delhi and Mumbai. However, we also love the enchanting areas of Rajasthan and of course, our home roots – Punjab.
You father taught you religious music in the Gurdwara. From the Gurdwara to music studios, how did you guys land up being the kings of Bhangra hip-hop?Well, most talented popular singers and musicians of our time came from religious backgrounds. And I guess there’s spiritual power by starting with the name of the Lord and then continuing with the support of brothers and family.
