Story: It is impossible for Saraswati Parthasarthy (Mawra Hocane) to get a guy for herself. After being turned down by ten men and disowned by her own family, Saroo finds solace in her incorrigible neighbour Inder (Harshvardhan Rane). Does their love story see a happy ending?

Review: A brooding, disgruntled, gruffly man with a heart of gold falls in love with a simple girl from a traditional family... quite an unlikely pair? Well, not for Bollywood atleast. But you forgive director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru just because of their perfect casting. When everything falls flat in the film, the lead pair hold the forte with their effortless chemistry. For a romantic drama, the film has its most essential element right - the love story is impeccable.

movie

It is mighty flawed otherwise. The sub tracks dilute the build-up of the movie. In the first half, the film wastes too much of its time and energy in what they call 'the make-over of the Vibhuti aunty'. Vijay Raaz breaks into an abhorrent item song with back-up dancers straight out of the sets of Shefali Jariwala's Kaanta Laga and give the 'fossil' Saroo a modern look. If this doesn't kill the audience, a father executing the last rites of his living daughter will.

As long as the focus stays on its leads, the film does a good job. Harshavardhan, besides flaunting his perfectly chiseled torso and walking topless all through the film, give his angst some charm. Mawra matches up with her innocence and vulnerability. From Inder softening every time he is around Saraswati, to watching them goof around in Kheech Meri Photo, they are a treat from the word go. You want to invest in these characters but the movie gets shrill over its 155 minutes, a little too sappy for liking and eventually boring. Your heart genuinely goes out to Harsh and Mawra who are let down by their clumsy narrative.

Aashiqui 2 did a good job at bringing back the 90s' melodramatic romance back but Sanam Teri Kasam is barely as compelling.

Plot Summary

Saraswati (Mawra Hocane) is a typical Tam-Brahm who works as librarian. Her plain jane appearance repels men. All efforts of her father to find the right groom fall flat because no one finds her appealing. They insist that her sister Kaveri will be wed only once she has tied the knot.

When her sister's relationship starts getting affected, Saraswati decides to go in for a makeover. She seeks help from obnoxious neighbour Inder (Harshvardhan Rane), whose girlfriend is a well-know stylist. The girlfriend finds her in Inder's home at 4 am and assumes that they are in a relationship. She throws a bottle at them that hits Inder. Saroo has to take him to a hospital and that's when the building guard assumes that the two are some sort of an item. The word spreads and hence her father disowns her. With Inder's help, she gets a makeover and woos over her office crush Abhimanyu.

In the meantime, Inder falls for Saroo. When she is left at the alter by Abhimanyu, he takes her to his house where Abhimanyu's father tells them that he doesn't want him to wed a woman who has been disowned by her own family. Heartbroken, she lands up at her own honeymoon suite and Inder and she make love. Next morning, Inder watches her leave with Abhimanyu. Inder ends up heartbroken and depressed. When he is unable to find Saroo anywhere, he rushes to meet Abhimanyu who tells him that they aren't together. Inder finally finds her in a monastery and he professes his love to her. He discovers that she is suffering from an untreatable tumour. To fulfill her wish, he decorates a home for her and makes her watch the live video of her sister's wish. Inder keeps trying to patch her up with her family but the efforts backfire and Saroo's father gets him arrested.

Saroo gets a discharge while he is in custody. She finds all his old notes in the library where she worked. The kind cop lets Inder go and Saroo proposes to him. The two get married next day and Inder makes sure her parents are present to witness it. After signing the marriage document, she faints and the doctors inform she has little time to live. Inder tells Saroo on their last day why he and his father don't get along. His father comes around after her death and he finally fulfills Saroo's last wish. Inder stands next to the tree that is Saroo's grave and talks to her spirit that remains in the tree.
