Do not underestimate the power of a Common man

Story: Intriguingly stoic, a mysterious man (Irrfan as Nirmal Kumar) kidnaps the Home Minister's (Tushar Dalvi) son Rohan. Strangely, Nirmal doesn't ask for money. He demands that the Minister and his team must go looking for his missing son first in order to get Rohan back. What is the tragedy of his life and motive behind the abduction?

Review: Turns out, Nirmal holds the corrupt politicians responsible for what happened to his son. He now seeks answers from those accountable.

Kudos to Irrfan and Nishikant Kamat for daring to make this poignant, provocative and politically incorrect piece of cinema, that makes its point unabashedly. Though predictable and a tad stretched, the emotional crime drama unfolds like a thriller. It tears your heart out by exposing the plight of the Middle-class citizens and their 'aukad' in the eyes of those in power.

What happens when an ordinary man then becomes a juggler (Madaari used as a metaphor) and makes the corrupt dance to his tunes?

While Nana Patekar's riveting Krantiveer aspired to awaken the society from its slumber, Madaari makes a similar statement in the most understated way. The socio-political drama doesn't scream for justice, it shames the culprits instead.

However, more than its social relevance, the highlight of Madaari is Irrfan's awe-inspiring performance. His portrayal of a single father, torn between loss and revenge brings a lump to your throat. He moves you to tears, in that spectacularly heartbreaking hospital scene, which will go down in movie history as one of the finest tragic moments. You feel his anger, pain and guilt. Jimmy Sheirgill, once again plays the honest good cop and fits in perfectly. Tushar Dalvi is competent.

Kamat's execution falters a bit though. He tries too hard to be ambiguous at times, when a simple storytelling could have been as effective. However, overall, his intent deserves an applause as Madaari shames the trend of rising apathy that is often misconstrued as resilience.

Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Plot Summary:

A mysterious man with a tragic past (Irrfan as Nirmal Kumar) kidnaps the son (Vishesh Bansal as Rohan) of Home Minister Prashant Godwami (Tushar Dalvi) from Dehradun. The minster immediately appoints CBI officer Nachiket (Jimmy Sheirgill) to investigate the case. The kidnapper doesn’t demand for any money but tells the minister that he should find his missing son (Apu) first, if he wants Rohan back. He also hints that he lost his son in a conspiracy stemming from corruption. Nachiket suspects that Apu may be a victim of a man-made disaster like a bridge collapse that had occurred in Mumbai. Meanwhile, a lodge receptionist identifies Rohan, after CBI releases his pictures in papers and on digital media. He informs the cops about Nirmal and his looks. An old man in Mumbai also reveals Nirmal’s identity and his residential address. It is discovered that Nirmal’s seven year old son Apu got killed while he was passing under the Mumbai flyover which collapsed, killing many others. Nirmal’s wife leaves him and shifts to the US, thus making him solely responsible for Apu. He is a doting father, who diligently looks after his understanding son. He regrets not dropping his son off to school personally, on the fateful day that he got killed under the bridge, on his way to school. Nirmal happens to be a technician and chooses to go attend a client over dropping Apu to school to make some extra money. In the process, ends up losing him forever. He now seeks answers from those who were involved in the dubious activities that led to the bridge collapse. He calls for a meeting at his home, forcing the ministers to show up as he warns that he may kill Rohan, if they don’t. He also asks a TV channel to cover their interaction live. The home minister, his colleague, civil engineer and bridge contractor admit their wrong doings and corruption allegations. They confess that they extorted money for themselves and their political parties by using substandard material. All of it is televised. On getting the answers he seeks, Nirmal lets Rohan and the rest leave his house safely. Nachiket arrests Nirmal and let him let go of his son’s belongings in the sea, before taking him to jail. Nirmal gets the closure he seeks.
