Deewana: Lesser known facts

'Deewana' which released on June 25, 1992 is still remembered today as it was the debut film of actor Shah Rukh Khan who went on to become the Badshah of Bollywood. Today, Shah Rukh Khan completes 22 years in the Hindi film industry and it wasn't surprising to see him as the trending topic on micro blogging website Twitter. King Khan also posted on his official Twitter handle about his debut film 'Deewana' and wrote "All notions, creations & experiences of decades will end on the day of truth. I tirelessly work to ignore the inevitable. Thx for 22 yrs of O2. I have till date not seen Deewana. I have a notion that I don't want to see my first or last creation. They r bookends, the story is between" (sic).

Directed by Raj Kanwar, 'Deewana' starred actress Divya Bharti and actor Rishi Kapoor. This film is still remembered today as it gave the industry a superstar in the form of Shah Rukh Khan. But little do we know that Shah Rukh Khan wasn't the first choice for the role. Before King Khan was signed up for the project, the film was offered to none other than Armaan Kohli! Yes, Armaan Kohli who came into the limelight more recently for his TV debut in the reality show 'Bigg Boss' and his alleged relationship with actress Kajol's younger sister Tanishaa. SRK bagged the role only after Armaan Kohli walked out of the project due to creative differences after the first schedule.

Undoubtedly 'Deewana' was Shah Rukh Khan's big Bollywood debut but the actor makes his appearance in the film only in the second half! Yes, the film revolves around Divya Bharti and Rishi Kapoor in the first half and SRK is introduced in the latter part of the movie. Unlike other newcomers in Bollywood today who get a full film to themselves and a big launch, King Khan had to star opposite Bollywood biggie Rishi Kapoor. Although, Shah Rukh managed to make his presence felt in the film and the rest as they say is history!

Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti's pairing became quite a big hit post the success of their film 'Deewana'. Although Divya Bharti had done a few Telugu films, the year 1992 saw her in two films. One was David Dhawan's 'Shola Aur Shabnam' and Raj Kanwar's 'Deewana'. Her work in both the films was appreciated and the film went on to become the biggest hit of that year. Both Divya Bharti and Shah Rukh Khan won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut respectively that year.

The film 'Deewana' was a big musical success as well. The film's songs were a rage back in the 90s and rightly so as the music director duo of Nadeem Shravan won a Filmfare Award for the same. It was the third Filmfare Award for Best Music in a row that Nadeem and Shravan had won. Their earlier ones being - 'Aashiqui' in the year 1990 and 'Saajan' in the year 1991. Shah Rukh Khan's debut song in the film was 'Koi Na Koi Chahiye' where he can be seen singing while riding a bike.

Now here is something we all can look forward to. Since sequels are the new trend in Bollywood how can Shah Rukh Khan's debut film 'Deewana' be left alone then. If rumour mills are given any heed then, a sequel is being planned by the producers and directors of 'Deewana'. The story of the sequel will be different from the original film. While the original had superstars like the late Divya Bharti, Shah Rukh Khan and Rishi Kapoor, casting is apparently on for the sequel. Reports suggest that Nadeem-Shravan, the original musical duo, will once again return to compose music for the sequel.
