Ranveer Singh turns Peshwa Bajirao

Ranveer Singh has already proved his acting chops in films like Lootera, Gunday, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. However, for Bajirao Mastani, the actor has pushed himself to the extremes. Stepping into the shoes of Bajirao, Ranveer plays a very intense role which is in contrast to his real image. The actor not only went bald for the film but also underwent an overall change of personality. He seems to have imbibed the qualities of the Peshwa warrior in the best manner possible.

War, kingdom, royalty

Unlike Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s earlier blockbusters which were work of fiction, Bajirao Mastani is a biopic based on the life of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao and his love for the Muslim courtesan, Mastani, despite being married to Kashibai. This film goes beyond extravagant sets, heavy costumes, jewellery and extensive song-and-dance sequences. It delves into several aspects of Bajirao’s life. It is a story of love, war, defeat, victory, betrayal and more. The teaser hints at the scale of the film which seems to be grand. Glimpses of the expansive kingdom seems impressive.

Bajirao Mastani is a historical drama film which narrates the love story of Bajirao and his courtesan. However, that their love story is misinterpreted is clear from Ranveer Singh’s dialogue, “Bajirao ne Mastani se mohabbat ki hai, aiyaashi nahi.” The trailer is taut with tension as a distraught Kashibai is seen hapless. A rather gutsy Mastani is seen playing with swords, trying to sneak into the fort. Bajirao, on the other hand, is at his intense best.

Reviving ‘Dola re dola’ act

After filming Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit in the hit song, ‘Dole re dola’ for Devdas, Sanjay Leela Bhansali presents a special lavani jugalbandi for Bajirao Mastani, featuring Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. It has been very long since we saw two leading B-town ladies competing against each other on the dance floor. Shot with 50 background dancers after several days of rehearsals, this dance number is the most awaited song of the year. Watch out for this one!

The moment you see Deepika Padukone wielding a sword and slashing a soldier’s throat with a kid in her arms, the image of Jodhaa Akbar’s Aishwarya Rai comes to mind. The diva has already wielded a gun in Bhansali’s former venture, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, but this time, she takes it a notch higher. Seen shooting arrows and slashing necks, Deepika is a revelation as she gets into the action mode. However, the sequence where she is seen alighting from a palanquin has us stumped.
