Wim Wenders on Filmmaking: A film is not a product
German filmmaker Wim Wenders
Wim Wenders recently shared his thoughts on what makes a film great and the filmmaker’s responsibility. He believes that a good film is one that enriches both its creators and its audience. "A good film is something that enriches the makers of the film—not just the director, but all those involved. They have an experience, and only these films allow the audience to have an experience." Wenders emphasized that filmmaking is not about producing content or a product. "A film is not a product. A novel is not a product—it's a story, something someone invested years into," he explained. He sees films as works that expand viewers’ horizons and invite them to engage as co-authors. "A film doesn’t exist just because it airs. The viewer is the co-author of the film—the author of his or her own life." He drew a distinction between "content" and storytelling, arguing, "Content makes us consumers. Storytelling makes us participants." For Wenders, filmmakers should focus on crafting stories that resonate deeply with audiences, not merely producing content to be consumed.
