Filmstars Anant Nag, Deepti Naval and Sonali Bendre would be seen for the first time in a Marathi film. "I had decided that if I ever do a Marathi film, it would be a film like Anaahat," said Sonali. This film will also mark her comeback to cinema after her nuptial status.

Anaahat (meaning eternity) is set in the 10th century and deals with the age-old custom of ‘Niyog’. Based on Surendra Verma’s Hindi play titled Soorya Ki Antim Kiran Se Soorya Ki Pehli Kiran Tak, the film tells a story of a king (Anant Nag) and a queen (Sonali Bendre) who can’t bear a child due to the king’s impotency. And in order to continue their legacy, the king coerces the queen to perform ‘Niyog’: a custom where the lady will conceive a child through another man. But what if the queen fails to conceive that night? And even if she does, what if it’s a girl?

While Sonali believes that director Amol Palekar ''has sensitively handled female sexuality'' in the film,'' Palekar confesses that the film has been passed by the censors without a single cut.

Anaahat has been shot in the rustic backdrop of Hampi. The filmmakers were given special consent to shoot inside monuments besides being permitted to shoot even beyond sunset. "We have taken great care to maintain the authenticity of the period in which this film is based. So much so that we haven’t stitched any costume. The costumes have been draped (not worn) as they would''ve been in 10th century BC. Also, the jewellery used is authentic," said director Amol Palekar.

Originally a Marathi film Anaahat will have English sub-titles in order to cater to the global audience. Anaahat has already been chosen as one of the Indian entries to be sent abroad for film festivals, besides being the inaugural film at the Indian Panorama.
