This Bollywood film promised a blockbuster but ended in disaster – Even Amitabh Bachchan’s cameo wasn’t enough

Big Budget, Disappointing Returns

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was made on a significant budget of around ₹25–27 crore, which was a huge amount for Bollywood films in 2007. Despite the investment, the film struggled at the box office. Its domestic collections barely recovered the costs, and even its global earnings couldn’t save it from being labelled a commercial failure.

2/5

A Power-Packed Star Cast

The film had a stellar lineup with Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol, and Lara Dutta in the lead roles. To top it off, Amitabh Bachchan made a special appearance that was meant to add star value. With such a high-profile cast, the film was expected to be a major hit, but it failed to connect with the audience.

3/5

Visually Grand but Weak Storyline

The movie was praised for its stylish visuals, colourful sets, and international locations, but audiences and critics felt the story lacked depth and direction. The screenplay didn’t offer enough substance to hold viewers' attention, making it one of those films that looked good but didn’t leave a lasting impact.

4/5

Music That Outshone the Movie

The music of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy with lyrics by Gulzar, became hugely popular. Songs like the title track and "Ticket to Hollywood" were chartbusters and dominated music charts. Ironically, while the songs became cultural favourites, the film itself didn’t live up to the hype and couldn’t match the energy of its soundtrack.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Cameo Couldn’t Save It

Amitabh Bachchan’s cameo was intended to bring extra excitement to the film, but it couldn’t turn things around. Despite his larger-than-life presence, the film’s weak plot and poor word-of-mouth led to its quick downfall. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is now often remembered as a big-budget Bollywood film that couldn’t capitalise on its many advantages.
