A new era in Bollywood (late 1980s–1989)
As the decade turned, recognizable names like Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Rekha, and Vinod Khanna were slipping out of the public eye. Bollywood was looking for fresh talent to emerge, and then met with the emergence of 'Maine Pyar Kiya' in 1989, which was a positive youthful change. The film helped to activate the career of newly emerging star, Salman Khan, as well as create a national sensation in 20-year-old Bhagyashree, as the audience welcomed the girl-next-door.
Bhagyashree’s surprising choice
At the height of her popularity in 1990, she married businessman Himalaya Dassani. She explained to DNA, "I left my career to be with my family. I will only act with my husband." The two then starred together in Qaid Mein Bulbul, Tyagi, and Paayal, although none of those succeeded. By the time Bhagyashree turned 24, she exited stage left from the entertainment world, and the fans were left to wonder what could have been.
Attempts at comebacks
Following a hiatus of several years, Bhagyashree’s efforts to revive her career in 1997, with films in Kannada and Telugu, were not as successful as her earlier representation, but at least it was a more stable form of resuming her previous career. It wasn’t until 2006 that she acted in films that included more supporting roles, such as 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye'. Several years later, Bhagyashree would appear in notable films, including 'Thalaivii', 'Radhe Shyam', and even a reunion with Salman Khan in 'Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan' in 2023 that pleased many nostalgic fans.
A princess beyond the screen
Unknown to many, Bhagyashree has a royal heritage. She is the granddaughter of Chintamanrao Dhundirao Patwardhan, who was the last ruling Raja of Sangli, and her father, Vijay Singhrao Madhavrao Patwardhan, is the current titular Raja of Sangli.
The “what if” of Bollywood
Bhagyashree's journey continues to be one of the most fascinating stories in the industry. She became a star overnight and at the peak of her burgeoning career, she stepped away to favor personal life over fame. Although she did return to movies, that unique choice at the start made Bollywood question what had transpired after 'Maine Pyar Kiya' had she not made that choice.
