This is one of the many queries that aunties put forward to Ayushmann Khurrana, who plays a sperm donor in his first film Debutant actor Ayushmann Khurrana was completely baffled when director Shoojit Sircar explained to him the role he was expected to essay in “Vickey Donor”. Contrary to his dreams of being launched as a college student or a Casanova, he had an offer of a different kind – a sperm donor.
“Initially, I was excited as I was clueless about the script. But later, I didn’t know how to react! The question on my mind was – ‘Do I look like a sperm donor?’ But once the script was narrated, I was convinced. I realised anybody can be a sperm donor without being either too tall or handsome, or being a wrester.”
Ayushmann says his mom is either oblivious of the concept or ‘appears’ to be unaware of it. “My mom is a simple middle-class woman. She doesn’t get it when I tell her what sperm donation is all about. All she says is “aise kaise ho jata hai?’ which I know is a genuine query,” he smiles, adding, “She’s just happy that I’m doing a movie. But I have a feeling that because my dad understands the issue, he must have explained it to her. Since she is not comfortable discussing the issue with me, she prefers acting ignorant.”
The reaction to this, Ayushmann says, is same for all middle-class women, like the ones he met in Lajpat Nagar, where he was shooting there. “Their doubt remains the same, ‘sperm donor ki hunda hai? (What do you mean by sperm donor?) And when I begin to put the concept in plain words, they recoil, say, ‘Aye haye, aye haye. Ae kaedi film hai? (Which is this film?). But I’m sure watching the movie will be an enlightening experience for them.”
Ayushmann says as a student, he remembers listening to the ads of Sablok Clinic on the radio. “Mujhe kaafi time tak in sabke bare nahin pata tha. I knew there was something called Sablok Clinic. Whether I was travelling from Chandigarh to Delhi or go for a movie, this is one ad would be played, and that’s why I will never forget it. I don’t think there is any harm if kids or college students know about sperm donation. ”
Ayushmann, who plays a
Bhagat Singh College alumnus in the film, says that he has never donated sperm in real life. “I haven’t done it yet. But I’m sure if I do it, I wouldn’t get emotional about it. I’m not a chick! For a young donor, it is more about the money, which ranges from `1500- 2000,” he says.
