Akshay Kumar’s production, “Speedy Singhs”, is set to speed into theatres today. After its grand premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, this cross-cultural family drama celebrates the spirit of the global Punjabi and explores the father-son relationship. Based in Toronto, this is a story about Rajveer Singh, an aspiring hockey player who is struggling between his Indo-Canadian traditions and his love for sports.
Played by newcomer
Vinay Virmani, Rajveer creates his own hockey team of Indian Sikhs, who compete with foreign players. Vinay’s also written the film.
It also stars American actress
Camilla Belle, and stand-up comic Rusell Peters. Akki says, ““Speedy Singhs” was an idea by Vinay Virmani. He came up with this idea for a sports film, about ice hockey. I liked it and decided to produce it with Vinay’s dad.” And how does he know Vinay and his dad? “I met the family 17 years ago, when I went to Toronto for the first time, to shoot for a film. I saw this boy who was about seven, and he’s a young lad now – and now you can guess what my age is, right? That’s how I know the whole family. We’ve been the best of friends, Vinay’s father and I, so whenever I go there I stay with them, and when they come here they stay with me.”
The film’s music is already topping the charts, especially rapper Ludracris and hip hop Punjabi sensation RDB’s track “Shera Di Kaum Punjabi”. It also features music by Rishi Rich, Josh and Jassi Sidhu. With popular actors like Anupam Kher, Rob Lowe and Gurpreet Ghuggi as supporting cast, “Speedy Singhs” promises to be a hit with Indians across the world.
