Shabana Azmi opens up on the most important factor of a relationship; 'Romance is the first thing that disappears with marriage, but....'
Shabana Azmi is not only a prolific actor and performer, but also one of the most fierce feminists Bollywood has seen, who minces no words when it comes to issues like women empowerement and equality. Having been married to writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar since 1984, the couple truly stands as equals in their long journey together.
Recently, while talking to Indian Express, the Makdee actress opened up on what constitutes the most important part of a long-term relationship. She said, "Respect! Though you can’t demand respect, you have to earn it. Love keeps changing. Romance is the first thing that disappears with marriage. But you have to keep working at it – it’s a process of constant adjustment. Togetherness, friendship, interest in each other, and giving space to your partner is paramount. That can only stem from respect."
Shabana, who turns 74 today, celebrated her birthday in New York City, surrounded by friends and family. The occasion was filled with joy and celebration as she shared a delightful video capturing the moment she blew out the candles on her cake while her friends sang the birthday song at a restaurant. In the video, Azmi sported stylish red-framed glasses paired with a chic black and red outfit, embodying her vibrant spirit.
In her social media post, she expressed gratitude to her friends for making the day special: “The birthday celebrations have started right from #New York. Thank you lovely friends.”
The warmth of her post was evident as actress Bhumi Pednekar commented, “Happy birthday Ma’am,” while Saba Pataudi, sister of actor Saif Ali Khan, added, “Happy happy Birthday Shabana aunty.” Actress Ila Arun also joined in the celebrations with a heartfelt message asking when Azmi would return.
