​Ranveer Allahbadia to Ranveer Singh: Complaints filed against celebrities over controversial remarks​

From stand-up comedians to Bollywood superstars, several celebrities have faced legal action for statements deemed 'objectionable'. Whether for political satire, social commentary, or adult humour, complaints and FIRs filed against these prominent figures have sparked debates on freedom of speech versus legal and ethical boundaries.

A formal complaint was filed against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, along with social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, comedian Samay Raina, and the organizers of the show India’s Got Latent. The complaint, registered with both the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women's Commission, alleges that abusive language was used on the show. The complainant has demanded strict legal action against the accused. The controversy erupted after remarks made by Allahbadia during a YouTube episode of 'India's Got Latent' were deemed offensive and derogatory.

Comedian Yash Rathi landed in legal trouble following a performance at IIT Bhilai in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district. A viral video capturing Rathi allegedly using derogatory language during his set led to an FIR under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Even the IIT management joined in by lodging a complaint against the comedian for the event that was organised by their students.

The segment, performed in the US, led to complaints being filed in both Delhi and Mumbai, accusing him of making indecent remarks about the country. Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh was embroiled in a legal dispute that went on for years, following his participation in the controversial AIB Knockout roast in 2015. The event, which also featured Arjun Kapoor, Karan Johar, Deepika Padukone, and Alia Bhatt, was criticized for its “vulgar, obscene and pornographic” content. Despite the show’s disclaimer for an adult audience, complaints led to an FIR citing obscene language.

Comedian and rapper Munawar Faruqui’s career took a hit when he was arrested for allegedly making offensive remarks about Lord Rama during a stand-up performance in Indore. Booked under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code, Faruqui spent a month in jail before securing bail. His arrest was particularly controversial, with critics arguing that it was an attack on artistic expression, while others defended the need to respect religious sentiments.
