Nina Davuluri made history on September 15 when she became the first American of Indian origin to be crowned Miss America. Her victory, however, was marred by racist slurs as social networking sites were abuzz with comments about her not being ‘American’ enough to hold the title. Ironically, the girl was born in Syracuse and has lived in the US all her life, as her parents emigrated from India 30 years ago! Way back in 2007, Jade Goody was criticised by the audience and the British press for racially bullying Indian actress
Shilpa Shetty on the reality show 'Big Brother'.
When we asked Shilpa about Nina’s victory sparking a racism row, she reacted from Dubai, “Nina has won the crown because of her intelligence and beauty. Every person belongs to the country they are born and brought up in. She belongs to America. I bet you, she’ll say the same. My husband believes he is British as he was born and brought up in the UK.”
As far as India’s obsession with fair skin is concerned, Shilpa added, “The grass is always greener on the other side. We are busy applying fairness creams while people in the West go bare-bodied on the beach to get a tan. Indian girls have ruled the roost when it comes to beauty pageants. I flaunt my complexion and I am proud to be noticed as an Indian wherever I go.”
Meanwhile, Nina showed great maturity while dealing with the situation, as she told the media, “I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
