‘My Brother… Nikhil’ to ‘Phir Milenge’: Bollywood films that raised awareness about HIV/AIDS

‘Phir Milenge’

The film ‘Phir Milenge’ came out in 2003 and featured actors Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty, and Abhishek Bachchan among others. The film was based on the Tom Hanks picture Philadelphia and tells the story of a lady who received a positive test for HIV and lost her job because of it. The movie shows how discrimination against those living with HIV occurs in the workplace, as well as the effects that come from being diagnosed with the illness. Directed by Revathi, ‘Phir Milenge’ is a significant film from Bollywood and is one of the first attempts to begin discussing HIV/AIDS-related issues openly and honestly.

‘My Brother… Nikhil’

My Brother… Nikhil’ (2005) by Onir is one of the most sensitive films made in Bollywood regarding HIV/AIDS. The story follows Nikhil Kapoor who excelled as a swimming champion but his world collapsed when he learned about his HIV status. Nikhil has always drawn his greatest strength from his younger sister Anamika who Juhi Chawla portrays in the film. The film explores the challenges that gay people face when society rejects them through its portrayal of social isolation and homosexuality.

'Nidaan'

Mahesh Manjrekar directed the 2000 film 'Nidaan' which presents the heartbreaking tale of a young girl who became HIV positive through a blood transfusion. After she's diagnosed, her family tries to enjoy the short time they have left and mourn the life she won't get to live. The movie stars Reema Lagoo, Sunil Barve, and Shivaji Satam. Young people with this disease experience suffering which 'Nidaan' reveals to the world while their families endure numerous challenges.

‘Zahir’

'Zahir', a segment in the movie 'Dus Kahaniyaan', was directed by Sanjay Gupta. It's a pretty intense story about AIDS. Dia Mirza and Manoj Bajpayee star as Sia and Sahil. The story's about Sia and Sahil, who start out as neighbors and become friends. Sahil finds out some things about Sia that hurt him and then sees how it all leads to bad stuff. The big shock is when they find out Sia has HIV. The movie's main point is about getting consent, being sensitive, and what can happen if you're not.

‘Positive’

Farhan Akhtar's 'Positive' is about a young guy finding out his dad got HIV way back when. The clock keeps ticking so he needs to decide if he can forgive his father while staying to support him during his last moments. The film 'Positive' provides an accurate depiction of how families deal with the complex challenges that come from this disease. The organization demonstrates its commitment to acceptance through its programs which help individuals recover while showing their dedication to caring for others. The cast delivers outstanding performances with Shabana Azmi and Boman Irani and Arjun Mathur leading the team.
