“I never wanted Esha to be in films, I wanted her to be a dancer” — Hema Malini on passing down her legacy of art and grace
Hema Malini’s journey has always been guided by art, grace, and cultural pride. Known to millions as the “Dream Girl” of Indian cinema, she is equally admired for her devotion to classical dance. In a heartfelt interview with Women in Focus (WIF) during her visit to Vancouver, Hema spoke not as a star, but as a mother determined to pass on the beauty of Indian art to her daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol.

Hema Malini to Esha Deol - Passing the torch of tradition

A trained Bharatanatyam dancer, Hema began performing at the age of nine, inspired and encouraged by her mother. Dance remained her first love, even as she rose to fame in films. When it came to her own children, she wanted them to follow the same artistic path. “I never wanted Esha to be in films,” she admitted. “I wanted her to continue as a dancer like me. Our Indian classical dances are so beautiful, and I wanted her to experience that.

Initially, Esha showed little interest, preferring football to footwork. But her mother’s gentle persistence prevailed. “Everyone would ask me if my daughters dance well, and I would feel awkward,” Hema said with a smile. “So I told her, ‘You must learn.’
Eventually, she agreed and took up Odissi.” Ahana, the younger daughter, also followed in her mother’s artistic footsteps. Both sisters mastered Odissi, often performing alongside Hema on stage.

Empowerment through art and family

For Hema, performing with her daughters is a source of immense pride and joy. “It’s a wonderful feeling to share the stage with them,” she said, describing the harmony between her Bharatanatyam and their Odissi styles. For her, these performances are not just artistic showcases but celebrations of culture, family, and womanhood. As a mother, Hema instills strength, independence, and creativity in her daughters. “I want every woman to stand on her own,” she affirmed. Through her art and through them, Hema Malini continues to nurture a legacy of empowerment and grace that proves that true artistry begins at home, where love, discipline, and devotion create timeless harmony.
