Afterdeclining lead roles in Kites and Veer, Bruna Abdullah made her Bollywood splashwith a cameo in Punit Malhotra’s I Hate Luv Storys (IHLS).Not the most intelligent choice for a debut, yet she’snot regretting anything. “I have chickened out of Bollywood many times. Iliked Kites – the script and Anurag’s (Basu) idea. Besides,I’m a Hrithik fan. But what I saw in the film was slightly different.
Andwhen it was offered to me, I wasn’t sure of Bollywood. I never thoughtI’d do a film. It’s a different industry with greatresponsibilities. I was not confident about movies. I didn’t think I coulddo it till Punit called. I was surprised as I had stopped going forauditions,” says the girl from Brazil.
The former VJ was alsooffered Zarine Khan’s role in Veer at a time when it was rumoured thatSalman Khan was ‘affectionate’ towards her. “I was unsure offitting into the period role,” says Bruna. So, what made her consider thecameo in IHLS? “I wanted to work with a young team and when I met Punit, who was dressed in sneakers and ripped jeans, I felt very comfortable. Ican’t tell you how happy I am with the positive response to my role. I hadImran as my co-star and Sonam, whom I’ve known for three years through myboyfriend, Sunny Sarang. I wanted to do something I was sure about. I did theauditions in English first. My character, Giselle, needed to be sexy, loud, andfunny, but I’m quite shy. All I asked for was a day’s time to learnthe dialogues in Hindi. I practise Hindi a lot with my driver. I can read andunderstand it; only, I don’t get to speak the language that often,”states Bruna.
Wouldn’t a lead role have been a betterlaunchpad? “I didn’t need to be launched. I got
Karan Johar asproducer, who said I looked lovely and was surprised at how well I acted. CouldI have asked for anything more? I did this film because I wanted to. I’mglad it clicked as I have a family to support. Nothing will stop me now,”says Bruna.
