'I felt like a fish in water when I made my first road movie'
German filmmaker Wim Wenders was recently on his first visit to India. His only wish when visiting India was to stay for a longer period. So, every time someone invited him for just 2-3 days, he would decline. Then came a proposal from the Film Heritage Foundation to do a road tour in India for an extended period - an offer he couldn't refuse.
This time, Wim was in India for 25 days for a trip titled 'Wim Wenders - King of the Road - The India Tour'.
What does Wim Wenders like about road movies? Wim says that 99% of fiction movies are not told in continuity or chronological order. But when he started making films as a young man, he used to think, “Why can't I tell this story from A to B to C to Z?” Then he realised there was one kind of film that allowed that - the road movie.
He says, "The road has an itinerary, and the story is told on that itinerary. Nobody thinks you're gonna shoot something at the end and then go back to the beginning of the road. You follow the road. And following the road made storytelling a pleasure. I didn’t necessarily have to know what was happening the next day because I could follow the story, and the story could develop out of the characters."
