I don't want to be No.1 says Preity Zinta

MUMBAI: She''s the pretty little girl from Upper Himachal who''s cast a spell on her audience. The bubbly, chirpy Zinta is not only the favourite of all her co-stars, but their wives too. You just can''t resist the Zingy Zinta! We catch up with the actress while she''s busy promoting her next film The Hero co-starring Sunny Deol.

We hear your were rescued by Sunny Deol in real life in Canada.
1x1 polls
What was that all about?

This was not for the film The Hero. It was for Farz. It was one of those shots which show the hero and heroine all alone in the wilderness on top of a mountain. They had flown us up on this peak with a chopper. And because it was so cold I decided to wear boots like a fool. They were not trekking boots and I just slipped. And as I slipped, Sunny caught my hand, and my feet were like four feet or five feet away from that big cliff. And he just told me, ''Don''t move!'' and then pulled me up. I just couldn''t talk then, I was frozen, scared, nervous and speechless. I guess that was the only time in my life when I was silent.

You are working with Shah Rukh Khan again after Dil Se in Karan Johar''s film. How did you sort out
things between yourselves after the Dil Se ''communication gap''?

Yes, I''m working with Shah Rukh in Karan Johar''s Kal Ho Na Ho. Yes, there was a misunderstanding, but it was something created by a couple of people. There was a little of idhar ka udhar. This one said this, this one said that... So we just let it chill, we both went our own ways... but you know in time, things get back to normal, and we''re fine now.

You are one of the few actresses who have worked with all three Khans. Can you tell us about one trait you admire the most in each of them?

Don''t forget Saif. What I like about Shah Rukh is that he is superfast. What I like about Aamir is, he is totally thorough. Anything he''ll do, he''ll get into it. He''s a complete perfectionist. And Salman... he''s in his own world. He''s neither try to be a perfectionist, nor try to be something else. He''ll just come there, deliver and okay, bye-bye. Saif is my all time favourite. He was the first actor I worked with. And I have a little soft spot for him. I was a complete newcomer and before I started shooting for Dil Se, I shot for Kya Kehna. And he was very supportive, he was so nice to me. Sometimes I would forget my lines or get a little nervous, but he was always nice to me.

And what''s the one trait you don''t like in each of them?

You want me to get killed? I like everything about all of them!

You are being touted as the number one actress right now, with films with top banners and heroes. Do you think you''ve reached your peak?

No, I don''t think I''ve reached my peak. And the only number I am happy having is my phone number. I don''t think I would like to be numbered as one, two or three. It''s not fair to me, and it''s not fair to anybody else, because everything is relative. It changes Friday to Friday. I think I''m happy doing the films I''m doing and keep me away from the numbers. It means I''m soon going to be slaughtered very fast. The minute you are number one, they''re ready to hack you down. So I don''t want to be No.1.

Recently, the press went to town calling you the only ''respectable person'' in the industry who stood up to her statement to the cops, while all the others backed out. Strangely, we hear you didn''t like that. Comment.

It didn''t irritate me. But yes, I stood by what I had said earlier, but that was a personal choice for me.

You''ve managed to maintain a rapport with not only your co-stars but their wives as well.

I feel women are extremely perceptive. And they know if you are a threat to them in some way or the other. I don''t think I pose a threat to anyone of the wives because I genuinely adore all my co-stars. I love them, but I love them as friends. Because once you are on friendly ground, you operate better creatively. You understand each other, if you have problems, you can take care of everything around you if the atmosphere is great. The minute you get into anything besides a friendship, it is a speeding car going downhill. That is why they say, ''Where you work, you should not screw-up there.'' It is as simple as that. So I think that''s why their wives like me. And don''t forget, I''m a nice girl too!

Recently, there were rumours about you being married to Aamir. Has that affected your rapport with him in any way?

No, it has not affected my rapport with Aamir in any way. I am sick and tired of the media claiming that I am married to Aamir. I think if I can stand up in a court of law (I might as well use it for my good now) and say what I have to say, I am sure I can say, ''This is the man in my life and I want to marry him.'' I don''t think I need to hide and get married. I think that is not Preity Zinta. I won''t sit in one corner and hide my marriage. So I think it is very derogatory to me that you keep making me super-promiscuous and keep attaching me to every actor who I work with. I''ve maintained from day one that I am seeing someone. Please respect my relationship. I am not seeing any actors. I will never see any actors. That is not a statement; it''s a principle for me – do not get involved where you work. So I will never ever get involved with an actor. So once and for all, stop it. Really, truly, stop it. Because it will never happen and if it does, I will come out myself and say, ''Ok, guys. This is the way things are.

We hear you''ve just rejected a Hollywood script. So when are you doing your first Hollywood film?

I think right now is not the time for me. I haven''t been approached with any script or any thing that has really excited, where I have said, ''This is the one!'' I am very happy doing the stuff I am doing here right now and if anything brilliant comes along – not just Hollywood, anywhere – I would do it.

You''re playing a Kashmiri girl for the second time after Mission Kashmir. Do we detect an affinity for such roles?

I don''t think it is me. I think it''s the directors. When it comes down to casting, they eventually come down to me because I do come from the mountains. I am North Indian. I come from Upper Himachal. So I very easily would fit the bill of a Kashmiri girl. I guess that''s it.

What are your forthcoming films?

These are all films completed and awaiting release. There''s a film called Armaan, which is directed by Honey Irani and produced by Dinesh Gandhi. It has Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Gracy Singh, Randhir Kapoor and moi. Then there''s a film called Koi Mil Gaya which is produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan. It features Hrithik Roshan, Rekha and me. There are just two more days of shooting. And last but not the least there''s Karma Productions'' Kal Ho Na Ho. The story and screenplay is by Karan Johar and it is directed by Nikhil Advani. Starring Shah Rukh, Saif Ali, and me. And I might be doing a little friendly appearance for a friend – Atul Agnihotri, in his film. Then next year I have Lakshya releasing, which is again produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Hrihtik Roshan and me and directed by Farhan Akhtar.

How was it working with the Big B?

I didn''t have any dialogues with him in Armaan and I don''t think I have any dialogues with him in Lakshya. And I''m going to put my foot down and say, ''That''s it. I want a dialogue with you, otherwise I''m not doing the movie. It''s not fair.
