Suniel’s production company Popcorn Entertainment has just inked a partnership deal with Ekta Kapoor’s film production company (C Company).
The year 2008 will see a busy production schedule for his company — Vikram Singh’s
Raaste (Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Bachchan and Sikander Kher), Apoorva Lakhia’s Mission Istanbul and Joy Augustine’s untitled next.Suniel, who has also been signed as the official brand ambassador for hockey, jokingly says, “I was appointed to promote the sport. As to why I was appointed is something you can ask the Indian Hockey Federation, because Shah Rukh Khan has already done 50 per cent of the job with Chak De! India.” Suniel feels that although the country has Sania Mirza, Vijay Amritraj and Vishwanathan Anand we have not got any recognition so far as team sports is concerned. He says, “The last World Cup India won was in 1983 for cricket. So it’s time to promote hockey.”Is production a job Suniel enjoys doing more than acting in films? Suniel hastily points out, “No, I would like to keep acting in films as long as good work keeps pouring in. It’s just that I don’t attach my name to hits, as a result of which, sometimes people don’t remember that some recent box-office hits also starred me in the lead. But, I never feel disappointed when others walk away with the credit.” Like his other counterparts in the film fraternity, Suniel never makes his acts of charity public. Very few know that Suniel is one of the few Indian ambassadors for an international NGO working for children. The actor is currently involved in a project that fights child prostitution. He says, “I love children and will do anything to spare time for them.” Besides his flourishing restaurant business, the actor who recently turned 46, has forayed into fashion business and hopes to showcase Indian fashion abroad. Of course it’s something he doesn’t want to talk about, right now. So is Suniel a better actor or a businessman? “It’s only because of my acting that people came forward to do business with me. Although I belong to a business family, I had always wanted to be an actor. Today, I want to be a successful entrepreneur.” What is the secret to his fitness? “I think being a teetotaller really helps. I really feel my body is fit because I am following that habit coupled with a disciplined lifestyle. I don’t know how many people would want to follow that yaar,” he says in his trademark, no-frills style.
