A meteoric rise to stardom

Meenakshi Seshadri made her Bollywood debut in 1983 with Painter Babu, but it was Hero (1983) opposite Jackie Shroff that catapulted her to instant fame. Her grace, screen presence, and powerful performances helped her carve a niche in the industry. Over the years, she shared screen space with Bollywood’s biggest names, including Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and Sunny Deol, proving her versatility across different genres.

2/7

Rajkumar Santoshi’s unrequited love

According to India TV, director Rajkumar Santoshi reportedly developed strong feelings for Meenakshi during their collaborations. While they worked together in Ghayal (1990), their professional equation took a dramatic turn during Damini (1993), when Santoshi allegedly proposed to her. However, Meenakshi, focused on her career and personal choices, declined his proposal. This rejection reportedly led to tensions between them, eventually affecting her professional journey.

3/7

Fallout during 'Damini'

'Damini' was a groundbreaking film, recognized as one of Bollywood’s finest woman-centric dramas. However, after Meenakshi turned down Santoshi’s proposal, things took a bitter turn. The director reportedly wanted to replace her in the film, leading to industry-wide discussions. It was only after the intervention of the Cine Workers Association that she was reinstated, allowing her to deliver one of the most iconic performances of her career.

4/7

A last collaboration with 'Ghatak'

Despite their differences, Meenakshi and Santoshi worked together again in 'Ghatak' (1996), a film that was reportedly signed before their fallout. However, after this, she stepped away from Bollywood. Though her performance in 'Ghatak' was appreciated, the strained professional relationship with the director and the industry’s changing dynamics likely influenced her decision to retire from films.

5/7

A sudden exit from Bollywood

At the peak of her career, Meenakshi chose to leave the industry in 1995. She married investment banker Harish Mysore and moved to the United States, settling in Plano, Texas. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she completely distanced herself from Bollywood, prioritizing family life over stardom. Her departure remains one of Bollywood’s most talked-about exits, especially since she had the potential to remain a leading actress for years.

6/7

Expressing interest in a comeback

Despite being away from the limelight for decades, Meenakshi has often visited Mumbai and, in recent years, hinted at a possible Bollywood comeback. She has expressed her desire to return to films, and with the current trend of digital platforms and meaningful cinema, fans eagerly await to see if she will grace the screen again.
