From 'Bharat' to 'Ek Villain': Bollywood movies that took inspiration from South Korean films

After ‘Bharat’, reports are rife that Salman Khan will soon be seen in yet another Korean remake. We informed you exclusively that the film, which is touted to be inspired by the Korean crime-drama ‘Veteran’, will be helmed by Prabhdheva and is slated for an Eid release next year.

While this, let us tell you that Salman Khan is not the only one who is drawing inspiration from the South Korean film industry. There have been various films in the past when Bollywood was encouraged to pick up plots from Korean films.

Here we give you a rundown of Bollywood films that were a remake of South Korean movies:

'Bharat'

Salman Khan’s last release ‘Bharat’ was an adaptation of South Korean movie, ‘Ode To My Father’. The original film which released in 2014 is reportedly the fourth highest-grossing film in the history of Korean cinema. Directed by Yoon Je-Kyoon, the film starred Hwang Jung-min and Yunjin Kim in the lead roles.

While ‘Bharat’ had an ensemble star cast that included Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani, Jackie Shroff, Sunil Grover and others in pivotal roles. The film received positive reviews from both the audience and the critics alike.

'Ek Villain'

Filmmaker Mohit Suri’s romantic thriller film, ‘Ek Villain’ starring Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, and Riteish Deshmukh was inspired by the South Korean film, ‘I Saw The Devil’. The original film starred Choi Min Shik, Lee Byung-hun and San-ha Oh in the lead roles.

Riteish Deshmukh’s stunning performance as a villain the film was much appreciated. The original film is touted to be more violent than the Hindi movie.

'Jazbaa'

Sanjay Gupta’s ‘Jazbaa’ marked actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback movie after her hiatus following her pregnancy. The film is said to be inspired by the Korean film, ‘Seven Days’. the film is the journey of a female lawyer, who has to now win an unwinnable case to save her kidnapped daughter.

The original movie starred Yunjin Kim, Park Hee-soon and Kim Mi-sook. It was directed by Won Shin-Yun.

'Barfi!'

Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi!’ starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D’Cruz is one of the most appreciated films in Bollywood. The film is reportedly said to have copied scenes from South Korean movie, ‘Lover’s Concerto’.

Directed by Lee Han, the original movie starred Cha Tae-Hyun, Lee Eun-Ju, and Son Ye-jin.

'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo'

The film ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ marked the return of the director-actor jodi – Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan. The film, however, is said to be inspired by South Korean movie, ‘Masquerade’. ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ also starred Sonam Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh in pivotal roles.

Directed by Choo Chang-min, ‘Masquerade’ starred Lee Byung-hun, Ryu Seung-ryong and Han Hyo-Joo in the lead roles.

'Rocky Handsome'

Nishikant Kamat’s ‘Rocky handsome is the official remake of South Korean movie, ‘The Man From Nowhere’. It stars John Abraham in the titular role along with Diya Chalwad. The film is about a mysterious man and a young girl he makes friends with. When the girl is kidnapped and her mother is killed, the man goes to extreme lengths to save the girl.

The original film starred Won Bin and Kim Sae-Ron in the lead roles.

'Murder 2'

Mohit Suri directorial, ‘Murder 2’ starring Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandez was inspired from one of the hit movies of South Korea named, ‘The Chaser’. The original film starred Kim Yoon-Seok, Ha Jung-woo, and Seo Young-hee.

The film is about an ex-police officer who is tasked with finding some missing sex workers. When a young woman is sent by him to entice the kidnapper, he sets out to find her.

'TE3N'

Ribhu Dasgupta’s ‘TE3N’ starred Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles. The film is said to be inspired by South Korean movie, ‘Montage’.

The movie features Amitabh as John Biswas, a 70-year-old man, who seeks help from a priest and a police officer to find the people who kidnapped and killed his granddaughter.

The original film, directed by Jeong Keun-Seob, starred Uhm Jung-Hwa, Kim Sang-Kyung and Song Young-chang in lead roles.
