Farah Khan says ‘Andaaz Apna Apna’ felt like a flop to her; fans later made it a cult

Farah Khan recently visited actor and stand-up comedian Vir Das at his home for her vlog. The mood was very light; they cooked mushrooms together and also enjoyed ice cream sundaes and spoke about films in a relaxed way.

During this fun chat Farah shared something very honest about one of Hindi cinema’s most loved films, 'Andaaz Apna Apna.' She said she never thought the film would become so famous one day.

What Farah really felt about the film

While talking to Vir Das, Farah spoke openly about her first reaction to the 1994 comedy. She said, “When I saw Andaaz Apna Apna, I thought it would be a flop, and it was.” She repeated it again very clearly and added, “When I saw ‘Andaaz Apna Apna,’ I thought it would be a flop, and it did flop. It was a big flop.”

The talk around spoof films

The conversation started when Vir Das spoke about his upcoming film 'Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos.' He said, “Anybody who liked Om Shaanti Om would like this movie.” Farah quickly replied, “That means the entire country.” Vir then called Om Shanti Om a “top spoofy.” He compared his film to it. Farah jokingly asked him, “'Tees Maar Khan' also?” Vir then said he would rate his film closer to “Andaaz Apna Apna.” That is when Farah shared her honest memory about the film’s failure at the time of release.

From flop to cult favorite

'Andaaz Apna Apna' was released in 1994. It was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The film starred Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, and Shakti Kapoor. The story followed two silly gold diggers who try to impress an heiress to get her father’s money. Things change when identities get mixed up, and love enters the picture in an unexpected way.

At the box office, the film failed badly. It did not work when it first came out. But over the years, something changed. People started watching it again on TV and video. Slowly, the jokes stayed in people’s minds. Dialogues became popular, and characters became unforgettable.
