Esha Deol reveals Hema Malini’s advice on surviving Bollywood: ‘They would give me a cloth to cover up if I wore a short skirt or low-neck top’
Esha Deol recently opened up about the advice her mother and veteran actress Hema Malini gave her before starting her career. She praised her mother for being one of the top stars of her generation and for earning equal pay to her male co-stars.
In an interview with Hauterrfly, Esha shared how the constant comparisons with her mother began affecting her shortly after her debut. She sought advice from Hema, who told her that if she expected an easy path, she was in the wrong profession.
Hema also shared tips to help Esha avoid getting into trouble and uncomfortable situations in an industry dominated by men. "For example, if I was wearing a short skirt and shooting through the day, my man Friday would immediately put a towel on my lap the second my shot was over. Or, if I was wearing a low-neck top where my cleavage was showing a bit, they would give me a cloth (to cover myself up),” Esha revealed.
She also developed a special way of hugging to avoid uncomfortable contact on set. "I developed a special hugging technique on camera where I'd put my arms in front of me and hold the other person around the neck. This way, I could push them back if I wanted to and avoid making full body contact," Esha explained. She also spoke about her father and veteran actor Dharmendra, who initially opposed her acting career, though he eventually accepted it.
Esha touched on pay parity, talking about how her mother commanded the same salary as her male counterparts due to her star power. "She didn’t have to fight for the money. When she was ruling, she was wanted in every second or third film. She was the selling point of the film. If Hema Malini was in the film, the film would be a hit. So, she was getting that price," Esha said, explaining how Hema's presence guaranteed box-office success.
