Divya (TOI photo) Move over, Mallika Sherawat and Neha Dhupia, Divya Dutta is here! Divya has not just turned over a new leaf, with her new make-over now, but has also gone ahead and done some bold scenes for a new film, a political drama titled Monica. This political thriller is loosely based on the famous Shivani Bhatnagar (journalist who was found murdered in her Delhi flat some years ago) and female poet Madhumati from Lucknow, who was also murdered and both.
Reportedly, both these high profile women were suspected to be close to politicians. Ashutosh Rana plays the politician in Monica, opposite Divya Dutta, who exploits and uses her.... My character is loosely inspired by both, Shivani and Madhumati, reveals Divya. Its basically a film about those young ambitious girls from small town who are on the roads of self destruction, she says. Sushen Bhatnagar, the director of this film, says he is highly inspired by both the above girls to make this movie. Monica happened way back when Shivani Bhatnagar died in 1999 and Madhumita in 2003. I was present in Lucknow when that incident happened and few of my journalist friends suggested that I make a movie. They said, if need be they could give me direct access to Madhumitas family, he says.
But Sushen believes it is morally incorrect to make a film and comment on someone who is dead and gone. So I took the basics and developed my story along with my producer Kush Bhargarva who has been a politician from Lucknow, he says. Producer of the film Bhargava says I have been a member of the Congress Working Committee, I have come across these kind of girls and got inspired to make a movie on them. Our idea is to show the world, that ambition is not only limited to men, even women are equally ambitious, he explains adding, Girls from small towns are often exploited and abused by people who have power in their hands. The film he says has a lot of bold scenes. And Divya, whos been earlier praised for many powerhouse performances is confident about her role. I was initially hesitant but when I heard the script, I shed all my inhibitions, she says continuing, During the shooting, I have learnt a lot about these small time, young and over-ambitious girls fall prey at the wrong hands. At the end what they get is nothing but notoriety. Its quite sad, she says.
