'Bankim,' 'Vidyasagar' awards for 2002 announced

KOLKATA: The Bankim Puraskar for 2002 has been awarded to literatteurs Chitta Ghosal and Tapan Bandopadhyay, a release said.

<div class="section1"><div class="Normal">KOLKATA: The Bankim Puraskar for 2002 has been awarded to literatteurs Chitta Ghosal and Tapan Bandopadhyay, a release said.<br />While Ghosal had been given the award for the second volume of his <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Nirbachita Galpo</span> (selected stories), it was given to Bandopadhyay for his three volume work of <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Nadi, Mati, Aranya</span>.<br />Instituted by the West Bengal government in memory of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, creator of <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Ananda Math</span>, the award is given to writers for literary excellence.<br />This year''s ''Vidyasagar Puraskar'' has been awarded to Jyotibhusan Chaki and Sunil Jana.<br />Chaki is being awarded for prose literature in the non- children category, while Jana was given the award for his contribution to children''s literature, the release said.<br />''Vidyasagar Puraskar'' is given by the government in memory of the 19th century social reformer Ishawarchandra Vidyasagar, who is also known for his Bengali primer <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Barna Parichay</span>.
