'Any story can be taken ahead': 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' writer Hussain Dalal breaks silence on Ranbir Kapoor’s 'perfect ending' comment for sequel
For over a decade, fans have been chasing the dream of seeing Bunny, played by Ranbir Kapoor and Naina, essayed by Deepika Padukone reunite on screen for a second chapter. While Ranbir Kapoor recently noted in an interview that he feels their story is "complete," he also hinted that director Ayan Mukerji once had a "very nice story" for a follow-up. Now, writer-actor Hussain Dalal has weighed in on whether Bunny and Naina’s journey is truly over. Dalal offered a different perspective. Reflecting on a hypothetical 13-year leap for the beloved characters, read on to learn what the man behind the film's iconic dialogues had to say.
Dalal offered a nuanced take, “Any story in the world can be taken ahead. But at the same time, one should not take any story ahead just because it feels like it will work. Wherever life takes us, we will go.”
Dalal's reply comes across as a desire to protect the integrity of the original film. He believes that while sequels are lucrative, they must be born from a place of creative necessity rather than just commercial aspect.
“Lot of you guys want part 2 but there’s so many new movies, new directors, and new ideas to work with. I think 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' had the perfect end. So I don’t think it warrants a part 2,” Kapoor clarified.
However, the actor did offer a silver lining for fans of the coming-of-age genre. While he believes the original story reached its natural conclusion, he suggested he is open to exploring similar themes in fresh projects. “But maybe another film would come, of a similar genre, which you guys would enjoy too,” Kapoor added.
