Actor nahi par director sahi!

They started as actors and despite giving it their best, Subhash Ghai, Ashutosh Gowariker and Abhishek Kapoor didn’t achieve stardom.
Rakesh Roshan, who has 60-odd films with hits like Khel Khel Mein, Khatta Meetha, Khandaan, Khubsoorat and Aap Ke Deewane to his credit, wasn’t exactly considered a ‘top-rung star’ either. But when they got behind the camera, they tasted success.The latest to join the league is Arbaaz Khan (Dabangg 2).
Trade consultant Amod Mehra feels, “In the beginning, some think they are more suited to be heroes. They’ve got the spark, but sometimes don’t get the right roles. Nonetheless, they are better storytellers.”
Arbaaz, who started as an assistant to Mahesh Bhatt during Naam and Jurm, made his debut as an actor when anti-heroes were the order of the day. In Abbas-Mustan’s Daraar, he played Juhi Chawla’s obsessive husband and he did get noticed. He followed it up with decent performances in Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Qayamat — City Under Threat, Shootout At Lokhandwala, Malamaal Weekly, Fashion and Dabangg. When Abhinav Kashyap opted out of directing the Dabangg sequel, Arbaaz stepped in.
Abhishek Kapoor’s debut as an actor in Uff! Yeh Mohabbat went unnoticed. He turned director
with Aryan but found success with Rock On.
Ashutosh Gowariker debuted as an actor in Ketan Mehta’s Holi and was seen in Naam, Goonj, Chamatkaar, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and the TV series CID. He turned director with Pehla Nasha, followed by Baazi, but got third time lucky with Lagaan.
Subhash Ghai initially got small parts in Taqdeer and Aradhana, before bagging the lead in Umang and Gumraah. However, those films didn’t work for him. He turned director with Kalicharan and delivered superhits like Vishwanath, Gautam Govinda, Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak and Saudagar. Says Ghai, “Actors-turned-directors have proved, at times, better directors because they are more sensitive to the characters and know how to handle actors. Also, they are not obssessed with themselves.”
Rakesh Roshan saw more success as a filmmaker with superhits like Khudgarz, Khoon Bhari Maang, Kala Bazaar, Kishen Kanhaiya, Karan Arjun, Koi... Mil Gaya and Krrish.
