1/5

Pather Panchali (1955)

National Film Award for Best Feature Film (1955)
Ray’s debut film was a quiet revolution. A poignant tale of a poor Bengali family, it introduced Indian neo-realism to the world. The raw emotion, lyrical storytelling, and unforgettable visuals made it an instant classic and the first film in the iconic Apu Trilogy.

2/5

Aparajito (1956)

National Film Award for Best Feature Film (1958)
The second part of the Apu Trilogy, Aparajito followed Apu’s journey from a village boy to a student in the city. Ray explored the clash between tradition and modernity with emotional subtlety, earning widespread acclaim both in India and abroad.

3/5

Charulata (1964)

National Film Award for Best Feature Film (1965)
Adapted from a story by Rabindranath Tagore, Charulata is often hailed as Ray’s most perfect film. With haunting performances and rich aesthetics, it delves into the loneliness of a housewife and her emotional awakening. Ray’s direction was so precise, he won the Best Director National Award too.

4/5

Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969)

National Film Award for Best Feature Film (1970)
This magical musical fantasy for children was unlike anything Indian audiences had seen before. With clever satire, delightful music (composed by Ray himself), and stunning visuals, it won hearts and accolades—including the President’s Gold Medal.

5/5

Devi (1960)

National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film (1961)
A bold and haunting critique of blind faith and superstition, Devi told the disturbing story of a girl believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Kali. Sharmila Tagore’s powerful performance and Ray’s nuanced direction made it a landmark film in feminist and philosophical cinema.
