Did you know Dilip Kumar was the reason for Bangalore Saroja Devi to continue acting post-marraige?
Known as the "Abhinaya Saraswathi," meaning Saraswati of acting, Bangalore Saroja Devi turns today (January 7th). Being one of the most successful actresses in the history of Indian cinema, let's reflect on a life as rich and vibrant as the roles she portrayed on screen and also some interesting insights from her life.
Born into a Vokkaliga family in Bangalore, her father, a police officer, and her mother, a homemaker, were early influences in her life. But it was Saroja Devi's journey in the world of cinema that truly defined her.
However, behind the glitz and glamour of her professional life, there was a personal story of love and support that played a key role. In 1967, amidst a financial crisis and tax troubles, Saroja Devi married Sri Harsha, an engineer at Bharat Electronics. This union brought not just love but also stability to her life. Sri Harsha was not just her partner but a pillar of support, helping her navigate financial management and encouraging her to continue her acting career.
Their marriage marked a turning point in Saroja Devi's life. Her work in Kannada films grew, while her career in Tamil cinema gradually declined. Nonetheless, she found strength in the relationship she had with Sri Harsha all the time. It was he who encouraged Saroja to continue her film work post-marriage. And many may not know that the person behind Sri Harsha's decision was Dilip Kumar.
Yes, you read it right. In one of the interviews, Saroja was asked about her persistent commitment to acting despite her mother's opposition after 1967. Saroja revealed that Dilip Kumar once advised Saira Banu not to abandon the acting profession. Rajesh Khanna shared this anecdote with her husband, Sri Harsha, encouraging him not to deter the actress from pursuing acting.
Even though Saroja Devi acted well into the 1980s, her reputation went beyond her professional record. She turned into an example of determination, managing both her career and personal struggles. Her story is not simply that of a well-known actress but one of a lady who made a distinctive contribution to Indian movie history while being supported and loved by her spouse at the same time.
As she celebrates her 86th birthday, one won't just think of her as an actress, but as the woman behind the roles, a woman whose life off-screen was as compelling as the characters she portrayed on-screen.
