People get surprised to know I am from Surat: Aayushi
She has made a name for herself not only in Gujarat but also across India. From sharing stage with the likes of Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa to creating a niche space for herself as a guitarist, Aayushi Karnik has taken giant leaps in a small period of time. Aayushi speaks about music and more.
You have performed at a lot of places and many popular names in music in India.

You are probably the only girl from Gujarat to do it. How does it feel?
It was like getting out of the nutshell! For a few years I had no idea about this "Outside world" that existed. The concept of playing out of the state was pretty exciting and scary at the same time! On one hand you are full of adrenalin thinking that you are going to play in front of a totally different crowd and on the other hand you are filled with self doubt because you don't know what kind of reaction to expect from them.
You think Gujarat, especially Surat has seen improvement when it comes to music?
Its all about creating a scene I guess. Thankfully, a group of people who come to listen to us which mostly consists of our friends are open minded in terms of listening to new music. The number has to expand and I believe that it has. Im not the only one who wants to change the music scene there. There are other folks who want to do the same.
What kind of reactions you normally get from the audience?
People appreciating after the gig is like a boost to the self esteem. That helps. One big shocker that strikes them is when they ask me where am I from? Surat, Gujarat!

How does it feel to be sharing stage with such big artists at such a young age?
It is like education and a great honor. Playing with the people I have followed, listened and tried to imitate is a different feeling altogether. You learn stuff from them before the gig, during the sound check which is the technical aspect, of course during the performance and even while having a conversation with them. Those are among the very few who would tell you honestly if you were good or bad and how to get better at it.
What are your future plans?
I like to keep a short term plan. I'm planning on forming a trio with Homi Rustomji and Manu Krishnan. Planning is too small a word to say because we already started discussing stuff about the sound of the band and the musical direction etc.
