From 'Hellaro' to 'Vash': Gujarati films that won National Awards without big buzz

With the blockbuster success of 'Laalo Krishna Sada Sahaayate' , all eyes have turned to Gujarati cinema that has slowly built a strong name for itself with meaningful stories and deep emotions. Taking a closer look at the industry, many films did not chase loud promotion or big box office numbers. Still, they won hearts and were praised for their content. They also earned the highest honours in Indian cinema. Here are some of the Gujarati films that came with low buzz.

'Hellaro'

'Hellaro' (2019), directed by Abhishek Shah, changed history for Gujarati cinema. The film spoke about women’s freedom and strength in rural Kutch. It became the first Gujarati film to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. The film also won a Special Jury Award for its cast. Though it earned huge respect, it stayed away from loud commercial success.

'Chhello Show'

'Chhello Show' (2021), directed by Pan Nalin, told a simple and emotional story of a young boy who falls in love with movies. The film won Best Gujarati Film and Best Child Artist at the National Awards. It was also India’s official entry to the Oscars and was loved in many countries. Even with global praise, it stayed calm and gentle at home.

'Reva'

'Reva' (2018), directed by Rahul Bhole and Vinit Kanojia, took viewers on a spiritual journey along the Narmada River. Based on a famous novel, the film won Best Feature Film in Gujarati at the National Awards. It was praised for its peaceful storytelling and visuals but did not become a loud box office hit.

'Vash'

At the 71st National Film Awards held on September 23, 2025, Janki was honoured with the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her standout performance in the film. Adding to the pride, Vash also won Best Gujarati Feature Film. Helmed by Krishndev Yagnik, this dark themed thriller flick was later remade in Hindi with the title 'Shaitaan', starring Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan, Jyothika in the lead role.

Other quiet winners worth remembering

Several other Gujarati films followed the same path of quality over noise. 'Wrong Side Raju' (2016) won Best Gujarati Film with its sharp social message. 'Dhh' (2017), a fantasy film for children, won hearts with its message about belief and hope. 'The Good Road' (2013) not only won a National Award but also became the first Gujarati film to be India’s official Oscar entry.
