Gujarati cinema, also called Dhollywood, began its journey in the 1930s with early films like 'Narsinh Mehta'. Over time, the industry faced a long slowdown. This happened especially in the late 20th century. Fewer films were made, and audiences slowly moved away. Things began to change around 2005. Here are some of reasons why comedy films became the heart of Gujarati film industry and how it helped in reviving it.

Recent films prove that comedy is still going strong. 'Bhalle Padharya' helmed by Maniesh Kumar Madhav, stars Bharat Chawda, Prem Gadhavi Saurabh Rajyaguru and others is a mixed horror with humor. Also an intense horror movie like 'Vash' and 'Vash 2' featuring Janki Bodiwala has managed to pull more crowds toward the industry.
