Public cultural festival announced with focus on Telugu cinema and literature

A new public cultural festival titled Avakai: Amaravati Festival of Cinema, Culture and Literature has been announced by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and is scheduled to be held from January 8 to 10, 2026. The festival is planned as a multidisciplinary platform focusing on Telugu cinema, literature and the performing arts. According to the organisers, the festival is designed to move beyond conventional indoor formats by using open public spaces and riverfront locations. The programme will include cinema screenings, literary discussions, poetry readings, music, dance, theatre performances and workshops. Organisers said the aim is to bring together different art forms within a shared public setting. A significant portion of the programme will focus on Telugu cinema, examining its literary roots, narrative traditions and contemporary developments through panel discussions and curated sessions. The literary segment will include poetry readings and mushaira sessions in Telugu and Urdu, alongside conversations on storytelling and adaptation. The festival will open with a formal inauguration, followed by performances drawn from classical, folk, contemporary and cinematic traditions. The programme also includes theatre-based storytelling, dance productions rooted in regional forms, and collaborative musical presentations. Workshops led by practitioners from theatre, dance, music and puppetry are planned as part of the daytime schedule. In addition to performances, the festival will host a series of conversations featuring writers, filmmakers and journalists. These sessions will examine themes such as character construction in cinema, the relationship between literature and film, and the role of mythology and music in storytelling. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the festival was conceived as a public-facing cultural initiative. “The idea is to create a shared space where cinema, literature and the performing arts can be experienced together, while encouraging participation and learning,” he said. Minister for Tourism and Culture Kandula Durgesh said the festival aligns with the state’s efforts to integrate culture with public engagement. “Such platforms help bring artistic traditions into everyday public spaces,” he said. The festival is being organised by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority and produced by Teamwork Arts. Officials associated with the project said the event is intended to function as a recurring cultural platform, combining performance, dialogue and public access within an open format.
