Patuli’s reinvention: From a quiet lakeside to adda central

Over the past 10 years, Patuli has seen one of the most visible neighbourhood transformations in south Kolkata. What was once a poorly lit, deserted lakeside stretch has been redesigned into a vibrant public space that now serves as a recreational, cultural and commercial hub.


What it was
Until the mid-2010s, much of the Patuli jheel remained neglected, with dark embankments and little public activity after evening. “After 7pm, the area would grow deserted,” recalls resident Vishwa Biswas, who has lived here for nearly 20 years. “The lakefront was dark, neglected and often unsafe.” Despite being part of a planned township, the lakeside lacked installations, attractions or organised activity, remaining a residential space with unrealised potential.

What it’s like now
Since 2015, the jheel-side has evolved into a structured public destination. “The development project started in 2015,” recalls artisan Shibshankar Das, as improved lighting, seating and landscaping made the stretch safer and more accessible at night. Installations, football-themed artworks and a children’s park shaped its identity as a community space. “Now even at midnight, many hang out at this spot,” says resident Vishwa Biswas, as food stalls, tea kiosks and seasonal events have transformed it into a lively adda hub

Why we love it

• It’s a hotspot to hangout with friends while enjoying the ambience and indulging in a variety of snacks from the stalls at the food walk
• It shows how targeted civic intervention can revive underutilised urban spaces
• Thanks to the redevelopment in infrastructure and lighting, the space has become safer
