Partha D. Mitra's 2018 film to finally get special screening in Nandan

A Bengali film that remained unreleased for nearly eight years is set to return to the spotlight with a special screening in the city this week.

The film, Piklu, will be screened at Nandan on March 15, where the makers are also expected to announce its official release date. Directed by Partha D. Mitra, who has also written the story, the project had been completed several years ago but got stuck due to production-related issues. The upcoming screening marks the film’s first public showcase since its completion.

Actor Samrat Mukherji said the film’s theme continues to resonate in contemporary times. “I feel this story is very relevant, especially today,” he said, adding that the narrative revolves around a child navigating emotional turmoil when parents become increasingly occupied with their own ambitions.

The story follows Arko and Antara, an ambitious couple focused on building successful careers. Antara initially steps back from her professional aspirations after marriage to focus on family life, but eventually returns to work as both parents become increasingly absorbed in their careers. Their daughter is left largely in the care of a governess, gradually leading to emotional distance within the family.

Mukherji said the film also explores the dynamics of ambition and relationships. “My character and the heroine are both ambitious and want to reach great heights in the world of modelling,” he said. “But the story also becomes a love triangle and examines how relationships change when personal ambitions begin to dominate life.” According to him, the narrative ultimately centres on crisis and emotional conflict. “There is a child who faces a crisis, and at the same time the person who loses his love also goes through a crisis. The story is really about these relationships and the situations they create,” Mukherji added. The film features child actor Pavi Roychoudhury in the title role. Although it was one of her earliest projects, Roychoudhury has since appeared in several Bengali films and television shows, including Bhalobashar Golpo, directed by Raja Sen, and O Mon Bhromon by Raajhorshee De.

The cast also includes Rahul, Debika Sengupta, Tulika Basu, Biswajit Chakraborty and Priyaance. The film’s cinematography has been handled by Rana Dasgupta, with editing by Pijush Ghosh. The music has been composed by Swagata Dey and Soumitra Kundu, along with compositions by Rabindranath Tagore.
