It was an emotional moment for audiences at Manek Sabhagraha the other day as they saw a twinkle in the eyes of this bunch of marginalised girls, who made five short movies.
The girls had never dreamt they’d get an opportunity like this, that they could make movies depicting their lives and that they’d be screened in front of a host of well-known people including those from the film industry, top cops and NGOs.

It was filmmaker and activist Ashoke Pandit who helped the girls achieve this.
Mahesh Bhatt was very appreciative of the effort. So were other filmmakers like Madhur Bhandarkar and Sanjay Chhel. The girls and their parents were all in tears, unable to curtail their happiness. Cry baby Roopali Ganguly was clapping throughout. Looks like she has decided to keep smiling after her appearance in a reality show!
“It was a one-of-it’s-kind experience for the audience to have a first hand experience of the initial fears the girls felt when they were told that they would be making films, the reservations of the families and the overall apprehension,” said Ashoke. The event also had some musical moments when the singers took over.
Kailash Kher sang the popular Chak De Phatte number and Roop Kumar Rathod sang Maula Mere. Funnyman Rajpal Yadav came in late, only to find that the event was over! B P Singh, Ramesh Talwar, Avtar Gill, Kundan Shah and senior cops D Sivanandhan and A N Roy were also present.
