Leafing through the booklet that was gifted to everyone who was present at the 60th birthday celebrations at ITC Hotel The Sonar Kolkata, what struck was a note penned by author Shankha Ghosh.
A hurried translation of it would read like: “There was a time when if we heard someone turning 60, we would think: ‘60? Is he that old?’ But now that many of us have turned 60, we feel like saying: ‘60? Only 60?”
Like Ghosh, many of the celebs present at the birthday bash felt that life has just begun for the painter and he has a long way to go. Said wife Shipra Bhattacharya, “I just wish he is fit enough to give expression to all this thoughts through art. I’ve always noticed that he is a person with so many different perspectives to himself. This, I say, not because he is my husband. On his 60th birthday, I wish he gets more opportunities to express his creative urges in various other fields.”

As the morning wore out, people trooped in. Instead of the usual cake-cutting ceremony, Shuvaprasanna was asked to float 60 flowers on an urn. Apart from his painter friends, we also spotted the likes of theatre personality Saoli Mitra, industrialist Harsh Neotia, politician Khiti Goswami and dancer Priti Patel at the do. Despite an ailing mother in the hospital, Moon Moon Sen was sweet enough to drop in along with her hubby.
As for the food, the menu had an impressive spread with dishes like keema biryani, palang ghost, baked mihidana with gulab jamun and payesh. ““I came down on Wednesday and made sure that they included the chocolate mudpie with ice-cream too,” smiled Jonaki, Shuvaprasanna’s daughter.
