Report by Unclaimed Baggage –the United States’ only authorised reseller of lost luggage – bags left behind last year contained some truly baffling items. The annual report catalogues the strangest discoveries inside abandoned suitcases, and honestly, some of them raise a very fair question: why were people travelling with this in the first place?

Wait… someone packed that?
Among the most bizarre discoveries were a full set of 10-karat diamond grills, a fragment from a meteorite that fell to Earth in 1576 and a 1-ounce bar of pure gold from The Perth Mint in Australia. Other eyebrow-raising oddities included a matching set of samurai swords, a full beekeeping suit, a set of gold-plated golf clubs and, a giant stuffed goose, a fake skeleton, a feather bow tie and even a suitcase full of rat poison.

The things people actually forget
For all the wild discoveries, most lost luggage was far less dramatic. According to the report, travellers most commonly leave behind clothing, jewellery, phones, shoes and headphones. Tablets, books and coats also frequently make the list — proving people often lose the basics while somehow remembering the samurai swords.
