A riveting evening of traditional dance
It was a Friday evening that will be etched in the memory of the motley crowd present at the Hyatt Regency Kolkata for a special show. After all, it’s not every day that you get to see a live show by dancer Padma Shri Gulabo Sapera from Rajasthan. The show started with members of Gulabo’s team rendering Ganesh Vandana, followed by the song Padharo Mhare Desh, apart from a dance recital and a few balancing acts.

Soon, it was time for Gulabo to take the stage. Gulabo is from the nomadic Kalbaliya community of Rajasthan and performed some traditional dance pieces from her region. Gulabo’s act was part of the third session of the event, Sur Aur Saaz, which is an initiative of Prabha Khaitan Foundation in collaboration with Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in association with Ehsaas Women and Hyatt Regency Kolkata.

The event is organised to showcase Indian folk artistes from various regions of the country. The audience gave a loud round of applause as the entertaining and colourful performance of Gulabo came to an end. The dancer even requested members of the audience to join her on the stage and dance. We spotted culturist Sundeep Bhutoria at the do. He said, “Sur Aur Saaz is our endeavour to provide a platform to Indian folk artistes and showcase their talent to the people of Kolkata.”
