On Sunday, Jagyaseni Chatterjee returned to Kolkata with a soulful Bharatanatyam recital, marking her first performance in the city in nearly two decades. Hosted at a city auditorium under the guidance of Dr. Thankamani Kutty, the evening featured both a captivating performance and an insightful discussion on dance and
abhinaya. Daughter of noted actress Soma Dey, Jagyaseni reflected on her artistic journey, crediting her mother and guru Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy for shaping her path. The recital explored evolving expressions of womanhood through poetry, highlighting emotion as the core of dance. Jagyaseni shared that her early exposure to both dance and acting was greatly influenced by her mother, Soma Dey. Growing up amidst music, dance, and visual arts, she eventually found her true calling in dance. Calling the performance deeply personal, Jagyaseni also shared plans to bring more innovative productions to the city, further enriching Kolkata’s cultural landscape.
