Dhakis go South while overseas plans take a pause
The dhaak is seen more like a decorative element now, but it can never go out of style. It has been and will be the heartbeat of Durga Puja
B’lore, Hyderabad invite dhaakis
“The rhythm of the dhak is now echoing in South India,” said Bapi Das, a dhaaki champion. “Bangalore, Hyderabad are inviting us, and even smaller pandals are asking for dhakis to bring authentic Bengali pujo vibes.” Shiki Das added, “It’s exciting to see our music embraced by new audiences.”
Dhaakis find new life in events beyond pandals
This year, the landscape for dhaakis has shifted, with traditional puja pandals hiring fewer performers. “We’ve noticed that while the demand in traditional pandals has dipped, we’re getting more opportunities at puja-related events, corporate celebrations, and even private gatherings. These events are helping us keep our tradition alive and sustain our livelihood despite the changing trends in pandals,” said Gokul Chandra Das. Echoing this sentiment, Sujoy Das added, “It’s encouraging to see that our music still has a place beyond the traditional stage.” Despite the changing dynamics, dhaakis are finding innovative ways to bring the heartbeat of Pujo to new audiences, ensuring that their craft continues to resonate across celebrations of all scales.
Not many Pujo committees have reached out to us for work. Until last year, committees would book dhaakis at least two months in advance, but this year, the demand is unusually low. It’s worrying, but we’re hopeful that bookings will come in last minute
