Loud cheers, garlands and eager fans jostling with policemen this was the scene at the Indira Gandhi International Airport at the wee hours of Tuesday morning. It seemed that almost everyone from Najafgarh and Bhiwani (in Haryana) had gathered there to receive Olympic bronze medal winners, wrestler Sushil Kumar and boxer Vijender Singh.
As the winners stepped out, the fans started playing the dholak, bursting crackers and showering flower petals on them.
As the heroes made their way toward the cars waiting for them, it became increasingly difficult for the police to manage the crowd as people jumped over the barricades to congratulate the winners.
Garlands and flowers overwhelmed Sushil (quite literally... see pix) and he had to be helped by coach Satpal Singh to remove some of them. When asked if he had expected to win, he said, Sach bolu... Maine bahut mehnat ki hai aur mujhe pata tha ki mein jeetunga.
Boxer Vijender Singh walked out proudly holding his medal in his hand and said, Achanak mein star ban gaya hoon. Itne saare logon ko dekhkar acha lag raha hai.
We also spotted Abhay Singh Chautala, MLA and president of Indian Amateur Boxing Federation and sports minister MS Gill and other officials of the sports ministry. Abhay said, Hamarey ladkon ne desh ka naam roshan kiya hai. We are proud of them and wish them all the best for the future.
