Hundred colours, one instrument: Sarangi takes centre stage

The Triveni Kala Sangam amphitheatre resonated with the strains of sarangi on Sunday, as the Saurang Sangeet Society organised the first World Sarangi Day, honouring legendary sarangi maestro Sabri Khan. Blending music with history, Kamal Sabri paid tribute to his father by rendering Vande Mataram, recalling Sabri Khan’s performance of the same on the midnight of August 15, 1947, when India attained Independence.

Carrying forward a 400-year-old Moradabad Gharana legacy, sarangi maestro Kamal Sabri says, “This day commemorates Sabri Khan sahab’s contribution to carrying forward the legacy of the sarangi, that’s considered the sweetest saaz among all. Dilon ke sabse nazdeeq koi saaz hai toh woh sarangi hai . Earlier known as saurangi , meaning hundred colours, the sarangi represents the true essence of India, which is united despite the diversity.”

As part of the event, Ustad Sabri Khan Memorial Awards were presented to people who made contributions to the promotion of Indian Classical music, arts and culture. The Lifetime Achievement Awards were conferred upon legendary vocalist L K Pandit for his contribution to Hindustani classical music and tabla maestro Sabir Khan of the Farrukhabad Gharana for preserving and advancing the percussion tradition.
