Beyond the boundary: The support staff shaping the home team’s success
As Royal Challengers Bengaluru prepare for the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans, the spotlight will naturally fall on the players chasing back-to-back titles. But behind every memorable performance this season has been a support staff that has quietly helped shape RCB into one of the league’s most formidable teams.
From strategy and scouting to player development and match preparation, the franchise’s transformation over the past two years has been built on a strong foundation behind the scenes. Ahead of the final, RCB Director of Cricket Mo Bobat reflects on the work that began almost immediately after the franchise ended its long wait for an IPL title last year.
“Soon after we lifted the trophy last year, we were very clear that we didn’t want to settle for that. That clarity has been a powerful motivator for us. There’s a calmness that comes from having been through that experience and knowing what it takes, but it sits alongside a deep hunger to experience it again,” says Bobat. At the heart of RCB’s resurgence has been a culture centred on consistency rather than isolated moments of brilliance. “Over the last two seasons, we’ve focused on how we want to play and the kind of environment we want to create. The core philosophy has always been to focus on our strengths and make winning feel like a product of our daily habits and processes,” he explains.
That philosophy has been reinforced by a support group that blends experience, expertise and clarity of purpose. Head coach Andy Flower’s steady leadership has provided direction, while Dinesh Karthik’s role as batting coach and mentor has helped players navigate high-pressure situations. Bowling coach Omkar Salvi has overseen a disciplined attack, while spin bowling coach and head scout Malolan Rangarajan has contributed both on and off the field.
Behind the scenes, assistant coach Richard Halsall, analyst Freddie Wilde and physiotherapist Evan Speechly have all played crucial roles in ensuring the team remains prepared, informed and fit throughout a demanding campaign. The result is a dressing room that appears relaxed, united and confident — qualities that have translated into consistent on-field performances and another shot at IPL glory. As RCB stands one win away from retaining their crown, Bobat is quick to acknowledge a constant source of motivation. “We are deeply fortunate to have the support of our fans wherever we play. Their unwavering support genuinely inspires us to give our best every day.”
