Judicial Appointment


Judge Subramanian assumed responsibility for the case following Combs’ arrest on September 16, 2024. The defence lodged an appeal challenging the basis of his detention, claiming that prosecutors have failed to present concrete evidence and have instead relied on assumptions.

Early Life and Education



Subramanian, who became the first South Asian judge appointed to the Southern District of New York, was confirmed by the US Senate in March 2023 with a 59–37 vote. Born in Pittsburgh to Indian immigrant parents, the judge has been commended for his legal acumen and dedication to public interest causes. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer described him as “a passionate advocate for fairness” and praised the significance of his appointment in a diverse jurisdiction.

Legal Career
An alumnus of Case Western Reserve University with a background in computer science and English, Subramanian later earned his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School. During his time there, he was recognised as a James Kent Scholar and Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and also served as executive articles editor for the Columbia Law Review.

Subramanian’s early legal career included clerkships under Judge Dennis Jacobs of the US Court of Appeals (Second Circuit), Judge Gerard E. Lynch of the Southern District of New York, and the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Prior to his judicial appointment, he was a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP, where he focused on commercial and bankruptcy litigation. According to the firm, Subramanian helped recover over a billion dollars for victims of fraud, exploitation, and unfair practices.
