Russel Brand’s trial date delayed by 4 months
As per a recent report shared by Sky News, Russel Brand’s London trial date has been shifted from June to October. The actor has been accused of alleged rape and sexual assault by 6 women, and has been awaiting trial since the allegations first came to light in April last year. As of right now, the actor has denied all claims that have been made against him. A hearing was held on Monday, where it was announced that the new dates have been set for October 12.
Six women have alleged that he assaulted and raped them between 1999 and 2009. In relation to the case, he also appeared in the Southwark Crown Court in order to enter a not guilty plea for two other alleged incidents. At the time, Brand was not present during the meeting, though he was represented by his legal team.
While the trial date has been postponed this year, a pre-trial hearing will still be held as planned on June 16 and 17.
Why was Russel Brand’s trial date delayed to October?
During the hearing, Justice Bennathan cited that there were major concerns about the jury’s availability, which led to the delay of the date. He shared in court that since the case is said to be long and lengthy, the summer holidays played a major role in his concerns. As per the report, the trial had been predicted to run for 5 weeks; however, that time has now been updated to 2 months long.
