Robert Duvall passes away at 95: Remembering the legend's most iconic war quote from 'Apocalypse Now'
Robert Duvall’s line “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” from ‘Apocalypse Now’ still echoes across pop culture more than four decades later. The quote, delivered as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in the 1979 war epic, remains one of the most repeated lines in movie history. Fans still approach Duvall to recite it back to him. Even political figures have tried to use it, sometimes getting it wrong. The moment endures because of how Duvall delivered it and what it revealed about war.
‘Apocalypse Now’ went on to win the Cannes Film Festival Palm d’Or and earned eight Academy Award nominations, winning two. Critics singled out Duvall’s performance. Roger Ebert, in his 1999 re-review, called the line “unforgettable” and praised Duvall’s “frightening emptiness” in the role. The American Film Institute later ranked it number 12 on its 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes list.
Empire, marking the film’s 20th anniversary, described Duvall as one of the “great military loonies of all time.” Australia’s Museum of Screen Culture said the moment “demonstrated the immorality and absurdity of the Vietnam War, embodied by Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore.”
Duvall, who died at 95, enjoyed the line’s fame. He told NPR in 2024, “That was a wonderful line. People come up to me and quote it to me and say it like it’s such an in thing between just me and them, and like they’re the only ones that ever thought of it. But that happens with everybody the same way.”
He almost did not play Kilgore. “I think the part was offered to somebody else,” he said. “And he gave it to me.”

'Apocalypse Now' iconic line and its origins
Screenwriter John Milius told CNN that the line came to him with little effort. “I just wrote it—it just came up,” he said. “That’s what happens. People love to think that all this stuff happens when you write a famous line—that you really thought about it a lot.”‘Apocalypse Now’ went on to win the Cannes Film Festival Palm d’Or and earned eight Academy Award nominations, winning two. Donald Trump's reference and lasting legacy

He later posted an AI-generated image in 2025 referencing the quote again.Duvall, who died at 95, enjoyed the line’s fame. He told NPR in 2024, “That was a wonderful line.
