Quote of the day by Jim Carrey: ‘Everything you gain in life will rot and fall apart, and all that will be left of you is what was in your heart'
Right from the dawn of time, man has been trapped in the rat race of running after one thing after another. Materialistic gains, despite giving temporary happiness, never allow one to sleep. However, what counts in the end is not what you gain in life, but what you have in your heart. These are not our words, but something that Jim Carrey believes in. He once said, “Everything you gain in life will rot and fall apart, and all that will be left of you is what was in your heart.” This powerful reminder urges us to prioritize kindness and legacy over the fleeting accumulation of wealth and status in our lives.
Ace comedian and versatile star Jim Carrey shared these words of wisdom while delivering a commencement address to the 2014 Maharishi International University of Management class. He reflected on life, fame, and what really matters when he addressed young students who were ready to step into the real world. He wanted to guide them to work in the right direction, to understand that the endgame has more to it than what meets the eye.
He knew his words would inspire and motivate; leave an impression. Thus, he weighed each word as he spoke. He shared that what people believe to be real gains of life tend to fall apart with time, but it is your core, your intent, what is left in your heart, which doesn’t have an expiration date.
Explaining further, he shared, “I am the top of the mountain, and I was. And the only one I hadn't freed was myself, and that's when my search for identity deepened." The big question for 'Bruce Almighty' star was, who would he be without his "fame."
He said that he often wondered, "Who would I be if I said things that people didn't want to hear, or if I defied their expectations of me? What if I showed up to the party without my Mardi Gras mask.."
"You guys are so ahead of the game. You already know who you are,” he continued.
The 'Yes Man' star in the same speech highlighted, "that peace that peace we're after, lies somewhere beyond personality, beyond the perception of others, beyond invention and disguise. Even beyond effort itself."
He continued to explain what is important to attain real peace. He even shared why self-acceptance is the need of the hour. 'The Majestic' star shared, "You can join the game, fight the wars, play with forms all you want, but to find real peace, you have to let the armor go. Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don't let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory."
In the early 1990s, he marked his breakthrough with ‘In Living Color.’ Then came ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,’ ‘The Mask,’ and ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ making him one of the highest-paid actors of his time. The journey thus started inspired many.
But was it all jokes? Jim is one of the stars who is loved for his versatility. Carrey’s dramatic roles and serious characters have been as well-received as his comedy characters. His works ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' are examples of the same. Speaking of his work, the last movie that earned him love and appreciation was the 2024-released film, 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3.'
In addition to appreciation, his work gifted him recognition. According to IMDB, Jim Carrey has 52 wins and 102 nominations to his name across television and movies. Some of his biggest achievements include 3 Academy Awards, 2 Golden Globe Awards, and 1 BAFTA, among others titles.
The man faced the highest challenges, never stopped working on his craft, stood at the top of the world, yet remained grounded.
