The buzz around Marvel's X-Men reboot is palpable, with renowned writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo taking the reins to create a compelling new narrative. Director Jake Schreier has praised their unique ability to combine heartfelt drama with expansive storytelling, promising a fresh vision for the mutants’ cinematic return, and rekindling hopes among fans eagerly awaiting the film.
Marvel’s new ‘X-Men’ movie has taken a key step forward. Director Jake Schreier has confirmed that ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘The Bear’ co-showrunner Joanna Calo are now working on a new draft of the script. The update gives Marvel’s long-awaited mutant reboot fresh momentum as the studio continues early development on the film. Plot details and casting remain under wraps, but the latest writing move puts two acclaimed television creators at the center of one of Marvel’s biggest upcoming projects.

X-Men movie rewrite brings in ‘Beef’ and ‘The Bear’ creators

Collider reported the update after Steve Weintraub spoke with Schreier while discussing ‘Beef’ season 2. In that interview, Schreier said, “We’re still developing.” He then explained how the connection came together. “Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on this season.” He added, “They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again. The collaboration fits Schreier’s recent creative circle. Lee created ‘Beef’, while Calo has played a major role in shaping ‘The Bear’. Both also connect to Schreier through ‘Thunderbolts*’, the Marvel team-up film that helped raise his profile at the studio.
Schreier made clear that he values Lee’s writing voice and the way it balances intimate human conflict with larger stakes. He said he loves “Sonny’s writing in Beef” and praised “the ability to take small interpersonal dynamics and explode them into a much larger canvas.” That quality matters for ‘X-Men’, a franchise that has always mixed action with character tension and clashing beliefs.

Schreier also explained what he sees as central to the comics. He said, “When you go back and read X-Men [comics], there’s ideology but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality.” He added, “Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that’s what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be.”He stayed guarded on production details. Referring to Marvel’s usual secrecy, Schreier joked, “We’ll film in a little black box and never leave.” He then added, “But seriously, the studio has experience with this. We’ve talked about it, but I can’t say anymore.”For now, the new script team is the clearest sign yet of how Marvel wants to shape the next era of ‘X-Men’ on screen.
